College Prep Training

While most players work with their coaches on technique and tactics, many players do not regularly practice areas that are highly sought-after by college coaches, areas such as physical presence and post point routines, proper practice habits and intensity, how to be a team player and how to play effective doubles. Basic positioning and other doubles fundamentals are lacking even in highly ranked juniors.

Donovan Tennis Strategies will be conducting a one-day College Prep Training session August 22, 2009 at Brandeis University in Waltham, MA. The focus of our training session will be on these critical yet often under-developed areas. Players will leave with drills and techniques to practice at home as they work toward developing the game and skills to be recruited by college coaches.

Players will have the opportunity to have a college video filmed at the event at an additional charge. When filling out the registration form please indicate your interest in having a video done and you will be provided with all of the details.

In addition to the on-court training we will start the day with an overview of the college recruiting process, have a panel of college coaches doing a Q&A session with participants over lunch, and finish the day with a coach-guided tour of three prominent Boston area campuses: Boston College, Brandeis University and Tufts University. Players can choose one of the campuses to tour during that portion of the program. Participants are responsible for their own transportation from Brandeis to the BC and Tufts campuses. Directions will be provided.

Event Lodging

• The Doubletree Guest Suites Boston/Waltham (781-890-6767) is the event hotel. Participants are eligible for the Brandeis event rate of $99/night. Click on the Brandeis University box in the lower corner of the online reservations page to ensure that you get the reduced rate.

Event Directions

• Directions to Brandeis University.
• Once on campus (South St.) turn into the Gosman Sports Center—the tennis facility is at the back of the Gosman Center. Parking is available right at the courts.

Event Itinerary

• 8:30 a.m.-9:00 a.m.: Overview of college recruiting process; the importance of what will be covered on court.
• 9:00-11:30 a.m.: Doubles drills and training; developing proper practice habits; practicing post-point routines; developing competitive toughness.
• 11:30 12:45: Lunch; coaches panel Q&A session.
• 1:00-3:30: College dual match with on-court coaching (some singles but emphasis on doubles).
• 4:00-6:00 p.m.: Campus tours run by college coaches (BC, Tufts and Brandeis). Brandeis tour will start at 4:00 p.m., BC and Tufts tours start at 4:45.
